"The world was vast and empty. The silence around me was so loud that I could hardly hear my own thoughts. I was alone."

The Farewell – A Sacrifice of Love

(April 1975)

April 17, 1975, marked the end of an era. When the black uniforms of the Khmer Rouge flooded Svay Sisophon, the respected ranger Bun Thon became a hunted man. His identity, once his pride, was now a death sentence – for him and for everyone who stood by his side.
This is the chronicle of the most difficult decision of his life. It tells of the silence of their last meal together, of trembling hands tying a bundle, and of that one agonizing glance back in the doorway. To protect his wife and children, he had to release them into the unknown. He walked alone into the vastness of the rice paddies, sustained only by hope and the silent blessing of his ancestors.
